“It’s your reaction to adversity, not adversity itself, that determines how your life’s story will develop.”
Dieter F. Uchtdorf
We all have a story of tragedy and triumph—darkness and light. Every story has both good and ill intertwined into a beautiful tapestry called life. My story, just like yours, began the day I was born. And it wasn’t very long after that day, that the adversity came. I am the second oldest of six children, born to a mother diagnosed with Multiple Personalities, now known as Dissociative Identity Disorder. My mother’s mental illness, and the 14 alters that came as a result of the illness, was the devastating consequence of 15 years of sexual abuse at the hands of my mother’s father—my own grandfather. Growing up was not easy. Because of the stigma of mental illness, fear and shame kept us quiet, and for years we suffered in a cycle of silence.
As one of the oldest children, it was my responsibility to care, not only for my siblings, but also my mentally ill mother. Because of my mother’s illness, I often cared for her 3-year-old alter, while almost simultaneously facing the nightmare of an abusive male alter and my mother’s prescription drug addiction. It was a delicate balance of running to care for her and running away from her to protect and care for myself.
The 14 alters who were housed inside my mother’s shattered mind were both my enemies and my friends. To live with them in harmony required the ability to bounce back, time after time. In essence—it required resilience.
I didn’t know it then, but as a child, in order to cope with the adversity and trauma I faced on a daily basis, I applied what is now known as resiliency skills to my difficult circumstances. Positive psychology is the scientific study of how people thrive in traumatic circumstances, and resilience is a key element. The traits I exhibited and applied to my circumstances not only allowed me to thrive in the trauma, but to ultimately learn and grow from it. Resilience became my superpower.
I am now on a mission to teach these resiliency skills to as many people as possible. Everyone can benefit from learning the traits of resilience—caretakers, leaders, employees, parents, individuals, teenagers, and young adults. These skills are simple enough that even a child can apply them. I know—because that child was me. It is in the stories of life where the best lessons are learned, come share in my story and learn for yourself the power of your own resilience.

How I Became A Creative Editor and Ghostwriter
I’ve always had a love for writing. I’m a word-slinger—it’s what makes me happy. So naturally, I began my journey to wholeness by writing my own story. As I wrote my story, I experienced incredible freedom and an overwhelming sense of joy that my voice was finally being heard. No longer was I perpetuating that cycle of silence that comes when you are afraid to tell your story. I was free to speak—no longer bound by the silence.
In my journey, I have discovered that we all have a story to tell, but for some, words and storytelling don’t come naturally. This is why in my spare time, when I am not speaking on a stage, I am a creative editor and ghostwriter. In this capacity, I get to tell stories that are powerfully compelling, but are not my own. I get to be invisible while using my writing and editing talents to give voice to others. It has been one of my greatest pleasures to help others find their voice and carve out a place for themselves in this world. In doing so, I hope that they feel that same sense of freedom I felt, when their voice is no longer silent. Through my efforts, the world gains incredible stories, while I get to sit on the sidelines and cheer for the people who champion them. It is truly an honor. If you have a story to tell, maybe I can help. Let’s talk.
